I made the sweetest little cushion today and thought I’d share a simple step-by-step so you can make one too — perfect for gifting or brightening a corner of your home.
Materials:
• Felt (background + colours for shapes)
• Embroidery thread + needle
• Sewing thread or sewing machine
• Cushion pad or polyfill
• Sharp scissors, pins or fabric glue, ruler, marker
Step-by-step:
Cut your base pieces — choose your finished size (eg. 16" × 16") and add a little seam allowance. Cut two felt squares (front + back).
Design on paper — sketch a simple motif (flowers, leaves, bird). Keep shapes bold and uncomplicated for felt.
Transfer & cut shapes — use paper templates or trace directly onto felt. Cut your coloured felt shapes cleanly.
Arrange & tack — play with the layout on the front piece. Tack pieces in place with tiny stitches or a dab of fabric glue.
Embroider details — add outlines, veins, French knots, satin stitch or little accents. Work from big to small; an embroidery hoop helps.
Assemble — place front and back together and either machine-sew three sides (leave gap to stuff) or finish with a decorative blanket stitch for a handmade edge.
Stuff & finish — fill with a pad or polyfill, then close the gap neatly with more blanket stitch or a slip stitch. Hide thread ends and give it a final fluff!
Care: Spot clean or hand wash gently. Dry flat — wool felt can shrink in a hot machine.
